PSHE

Curriculum Intent for PSHE

At King Street Primary School it is our intention to teach all children how to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society, through personal, social and health education (PSHE). During PSHE lessons, children will tackle many of the issues facing them as they grow and will develop skills to help them build resilience and coping strategies. Children will gain an understanding of how they are personally developing as well as begin to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.

All PSHE lessons promote children’s well-being and awareness of their mental health. Every lesson is accessible to all our children and differentiation is available in each session. All our children are encouraged to develop a sense of self-worth and are given the opportunity to play a positive role in their school and in the wider community.

At King Street Primary School, good relationships are fundamental to our ethos and our success in being a happy, caring and safe school. Relationships and Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is lifelong learning about relationships, emotions, looking after ourselves, different families and sexuality. We aim for the children in our school to acquire the appropriate knowledge, develop their skills and form positive beliefs, values and attitudes. RSE has a key part to play in the personal, social, moral and spiritual development of young people.

RSE is taught as explicit lessons through the PSHE and science curriculums but is also embedded in other areas of the curriculum and day-to-day life of the school. Children are taught by familiar adults who they have a good rapport with, in order to facilitate constructive and supportive discussions around sensitive topics in a safe and secure environment. Our high expectations of behaviour across the school community, interpersonal relationships, respect and tolerance of others reflect the British Values upheld in both our community and the wider world. Through our rigorous and progressive curriculum, children develop key skills and are prepared for the wider world beyond primary school, a world in which they can keep themselves safe and healthy and thrive with the support of the positive relationships they forge with those around them.

Our PSHE curriculum identifies RSE (Relationships & Sex Education) objectives in red.
