Intent
At King Street Primary School, we are committed to providing our students with a well-rounded education that prepares them not only for academic success but also for their future careers. We recognise the importance of introducing the concept of careers early in a child's educational journey. Our intent is to embed career introduction activities into the curriculum for Key Stage 2 students, ensuring that they develop essential skills, knowledge, and awareness related to career exploration.
Implementation:
1. Curriculum Integration:
- Careers Awareness Lessons: We will incorporate careers awareness lessons into the existing curriculum for Key Stage 2 pupils. These lessons will cover topics such as the World of Work, varying professions, and the importance of education in achieving career goals.
- Subject-Relevant Career Exploration: Within various subjects like English, Maths, Science, and Humanities, teachers will include activities that highlight the real-world applications of their subjects. For instance, in maths, students may explore how geometry is used in architecture, or in science, they might learn about careers in environmental science.
- Career-Related Projects: Students will engage in career-related projects where they can research and present on different professions. This will help them understand the variety of careers available and the skills and qualifications required.
2. Guest Speakers:
- Career Talks: We will invite professionals from various fields to speak to our upper Key Stage 2 pupils. These guest speakers will share their experiences, career journeys, and insights into their professions.
3. Career Workshops:
- Skills Development: Conduct workshops on skills development, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making, to help students build the foundational skills required in any career.
4. Personalised Career Guidance:
- Parent Involvement: Engage parents in career guidance by organising careers fairs and distributing resources for supporting their child's career exploration.
Impact
We expect that embedding career introduction in key stage 2, specifically upper Key Stage 2 will yield several positive outcomes:
1. Career Awareness:
- Increased awareness of different careers and the educational pathways to reach them.
- Early identification of students' interests and passions, which can guide their educational choices.
2. Skills Development:
- Improved soft skills like communication, problem-solving, and teamwork.
- Better-prepared students for future educational and career opportunities.
3. Informed Decision-Making:
- Students will be better equipped to make informed choices about subjects, courses, and future career paths.
4. Parental Involvement:
- Greater parental involvement and understanding of the importance of career education.
5. Community Engagement:
- Strengthened connections with local professionals and businesses through guest speakers and fayres.
By embedding career introduction into Key Stage 2, we aim to empower our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their future careers. This will not only benefit our students but also contribute to their overall personal and academic development. We will continuously evaluate the impact of these initiatives to refine our approach and ensure the best possible outcomes for our students.
