The National Curriculum for Design and Technology ensures that by using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Through a progressive curriculum, the children learn a variety of different skills and this enables a practical and critical understanding of their own and others’ work that gives a broader understanding of the world linking creativity and practical skills at its best.
At King Street Primary and Pre-School, we believe that Design and Technology is an important subject which encourages children to develop important knowledge and skills. Through the study of Design and Technology, children will understand the processes involved in designing, creating and evaluating products, systems and services.
The intent of our Design and Technology curriculum is that children will design purposeful, functional and appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria and using their learned skills. Children will use a range of tools, materials, components and equipment to design and construct quality products which meet the needs of their intended users.
Through Design and Technology, students will develop skills in problem solving, innovation and creativity, enabling them to become confident, independent and successful learners as well as developing wider skills such as problem-solving, communication, collaboration and resilience.
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Design and Technology, we use the D&T Association’s ‘Projects on a Page’ Scheme which allows clear progression through the school. Children will explore different techniques and methods, try them out and then have the opportunity to explore adjustments or say how they would improve their designs. As the children progress through the curriculum, they will have an increasing awareness of the health and safety aspects of D&T and be able to apply these within school and their own lives.
